The Ranch

We are a small, family owned-and-operated 4th, 5th, and 6th generation ranch in south central Montana named after our beloved brand, the Hashknife!

You are welcome to join our daily operations of a working ranch if you have never experienced it and want to learn a more personal perspective.

If you once lived this amazing lifestyle and can no longer do it yourself, we provide you a window into memories and nostalgia.

Our family aims to educate and share modern ranching while maintaining roots in tried-and-true traditional practices. We publish weekly videos on YouTube, share glimpses on social media, and discuss common questions to modern ranching while illustrating recent events on the Ranch.

Subscribe on YouTube to join our growing community and ride along with us as we travel through the ups and downs of ranching in the 21st Century!

Our Short History

The Hashknife Ranch in Montana, as you know it today began officially in 2013. However, the brand for which it is named has been in our family for over a century!

The land on which we operate has been a different story. our ancestors arrived and homesteaded the area over 100 years ago, but A recent discovery tells us they never officially owned this particular property where we reside until 1939. As most good stories go, there are more details involved but we leave it there for now.

Currently we raise, train, and sell gaited Tennessee Walking Horses. Where we once ran a herd filled with over 50 head at any given time, it is now reduced to about two dozen livestock.

Our efforts and attention are now equally divided between our Red Angus cattle and Tennessee Walking Horse herds.

Shortly after the COVID-19 food supply disruptions, we began to produce beef for private sale in addition to our annual commercial shipments.

In October 2020, we began sharing our history, knowledge, and experiences on YouTube and never looked back!

After six generations of working this ground and loving our herds, we now publicly share our passion. We are proud to provide a glimpse into modern ranching through our humble Montana approach.

FAQs

  • No, not at all. That Hashknife is located in the Arizona area and is illustrated through an entirely different shape. The Hashknife brand is a famous western U.S. symbol brand used throughout the nation and immortalized by Zane Grey’s The Hash Knife Outfit. We are a different brand entirely, but still representative of a unique, symbolic tool used throughout the ‘Wild West’ when times were harder and living was simpler.

  • That depends on what you are asking!

Horses? We have traced family connections to training and breeding practices as far back as the United States colonial period.

Cattle? We have been involved with cattle since the early 1900’s. However, we did not grow the herd to its current size until after the 2008 recession.

The Ranch? Despite living and working on the same land since 1919 and for six generations, the ranch was always owned by one person. It was officially formed into an LLC in 2013 for family and business continuity purposes.

  • Our name originates from our brand itself. It was originally recorded in Montana in 1947, but came from the northern Wyoming region when one of our ancestors moved to our current state and began cowboying for local ranches. From there, he registered the brand as a ‘cleve’ which is one of the few traditional symbol brands in Montana, but its name has always held the proper term of Hashknife.

  • Absolutely not. This is a traditional western brand that is named after a traditional western tool used for cutting up various foods. We have absolutely no connections to illegal substances, nor attempt to promote such items.
